Child porn law could affect everyone's privacy

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) says his proposed law will protect children from pornographers. But advocacy groups say it jeopardizes every American's online privacy by giving law enforcement easy access to an unprecedented cache of personal information.

The Protecting Children from Internet Pornographers Act of 2011 would require Internet providers to store the IP addresses they assign to a customer?s Internet-connected devices along with identifying information like the customer?s name, address and the credit card numbers.

While wireless carriers like AT&T and broadband providers like Comcast store account information, they have not been required to link it with IP addresses, which can identify someone?s general location and their device. (Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBCUniversal, a unit of Comcast.)

"An IP address is like a street address or a phone number; it's the arrow that points packets of information your way when people send you things over the Internet," Rainey Reitman, Electronic Frontier Foundation's activism director, wrote in a blog post. "But it cannot tell you who is actually sitting behind a computer screen, typing at a? computer."??

However, it can provide a pretty clear picture of your routine over time. People are creatures of habit. You probably check your email when you get up. You check it several times at work and again when you get home in the evening. With knowledge of your personal trail of IP addresses, it?s not too hard to decipher your daily activities.

That's why IP addresses, pinned to customer information, could prove invaluable to law enforcement as they track criminals.

However, under Smith?s bill, records of both suspects and ordinary citizens would all be available to any government agency at any time, no warrant required.

"This type of legislation goes against the fundamental values of our country where individuals are treated as innocent until proven guilty," Reitman said. "H.R. 1981 would uproot this core American principle, forcing ISPs to treat everyone like a potential criminal."

The bill has been forwarded from committee to the full House of Representatives for consideration, which is expected later this year. There is no sign of a Senate version at this time.??

If the past is any indicator, Smith may be in for a hard fight with activists. He was also sponsor of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) bill that would have shut off access to foreign websites accused of hosting pirated content. But he was forced to withdraw the legislation after massive protests by many of the same opponents who likewise thought the remedy was too harsh for the problem.

Looking to improve my combat-writing skills.

Helloooo. As my title suggests, I am looking to improve my RP combat skills.

It is truly outside my comfort zone. I tend to play non-combat characters, not because of my 'disability' but it's generally more interesting to me, and often the RP will have plenty of combat characters I am happy to balance things out. I think I'm a decent writer and role-player, I just seem to be missing something for combat.

The problems I *seem* to run into, are clarity and interpretation of action by myself and by my opponents. We just don't seem to 'get' what the other one actually 'did'. I really do try to be clear, I am unsure what I am doing wrong.

I have read through the guides in the library, and checked out the arena. The arena intimidates me a bit, because I am not looking to fight for fighting's sake (everyone seems so intense), I want to apply it to any RP I am in where the other players may or may not be using a 'system' like in the arena.

So, if you would like, shoot me a PM or reply. Maybe a practice fight and critique would be good?

Thanks in advance!

Leasing to Own - Beating the Banks | The Real Estate Briefings

Many people are now having trouble securing a mortgage to buy a new home due to the recent financial crisis and the new stricter rules for obtaining a loan. Banks and other lenders are now being a lot more strict on who they will give a mortgage to. However, with a bit of creativity, there are ways to become a home owner without the traditional mortgage. One option is to locate a seller that is open to a lease-to-own option on the home they are selling.

A lease to own option means the seller/landlord and the renter/prospective buyer reach an agreement. This agreement is written in a legal contract that both parties agree upon prior to the deal being done; this includes the sale price of the home. The bottom line is the renter agrees to buy the home in an agreed upon time frame (five years, for example), and the landlord agrees to put a portion of the rent payment toward the agreed sales price of the home (two hundred dollars). This deal allows the renter to be paying against the loan prior to actually buying the home.

In the event that the renter chooses to not buy the home, the owner of the home keeps this money that would have gone to paying down on the agreed upon price. If the renter decides to buy, he or she will be responsible to get a mortgage for the agreed upon price minus moneys paid toward the price of the home in the monthly rent. A lease to own option allows people with not the best credit to live the American dream of owning a home.

Cunning super-parasitic wasps sniff out protected aphids and overwhelm their defenses

ScienceDaily (Feb. 24, 2012) ? In the war between parasite and host, the parasitic wasp, Aphidius ervi, and the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, are locked in a battle for survival. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Biology shows that this cunning parasite sniffs out differences between protected and unprotected aphids, and alters its egg-laying strategy, in order to overwhelm aphid defenses and ensure survival of wasp offspring.

The wasp, A. ervi, lays an egg inside the pea aphid, where the egg hatches and converts the aphid's insides into a wasp nursery. The wasp larva uses the still-living aphid as a food source, eventually pupating inside the aphid and emerging as a fully-formed mature wasp. However the pea aphid is not defenseless. It is protected by a bacterial symbiont Hamiltonella defensa (and its associated bacteriophage APSE).

Although the wasps still lay their eggs, wasp larvae are unable to develop normally. Researchers from the Universities of Georgia and Arizona collaborated with researchers from Akita Prefectural University, Japan, to investigate what tactics the wasps might use to overcome the aphids' symbiont defense strategy. The researchers found that wasps which laid two eggs (superparasitism) in aphids infected with H. defensa and APSE were much more successful at producing live offspring.

However laying two eggs in uninfected hosts had little effect on the number of surviving wasps as only one wasp can complete development in each aphid. This suggests that having twice the amount of factors secreted by the developing wasp overpowers the protection due to bacterial infection, and is an adaption to ensure the survival of one wasp at the cost of two.

In a twist it seems that the wasps are able to work out which aphids are harboring the symbionts and which are not. Dr Kerry Oliver, who led this study, explained, "We discovered that A. ervi would preferentially lay two eggs in infected hosts, and a single egg if the aphids were unprotected. We don't for sure how wasps discriminate, but, when we looked for differences between the aphids, we found that infected aphids produced less of the compound trans-b-farnesene. This compound is a major component of aphid alarm pheromone and wasps are known to use this cue to find hosts."

Whatever the trick that they are using to work out which aphids are infected, wasps appear to be able to lay just enough eggs to stay ahead in the arms race.

DETROIT (AP) ? Four days before critical primary elections, Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney outlined a far-reaching plan Friday to gradually delay Americans' eligibility for Medicare as well as Social Security.

Romney said the shift, as people live longer, is needed to steer the giant benefit programs toward economic sustainability.

Speaking to the Detroit Economic Club ? in cavernous Ford Field, where the Detroit Lions football team plays ? he also made a play for primary election support in Michigan, which votes on Tuesday along with Arizona.

Romney said previous steps to toughen government emission standards had "provided a benefit to some of the foreign automakers" at the expense of American companies. He said future changes should be worked out cooperatively between government and industry.

Campaigning in the city where he was born, Romney described himself as "a car guy" who has a Ford Mustang and a Chevy pickup and whose wife, Ann, drives "a couple of Cadillacs." Aides said they were model year 2007 and 2010 SRX vehicles, one each registered in Massachusetts and California.

Romney said his proposals for Medicare and Social Security would begin in 2022, meaning no current or near-retirees would be affected. He also said he favors adjustments to curtail the growth of future benefits for the relatively well-to-do, so "lower-income seniors would receive the most generous benefits." He had described his Social Security proposals previously.

The two programs provide retirement and health care benefits to tens of millions of older Americans.

Beginning in 2022, Romney said, "We will gradually increase the Medicare eligibility age by one month each year. In the long run, the eligibility ages for both programs will be indexed to longevity so that they increase only as fast as life expectancy."

Under current law, the age for collecting full Social Security benefits is gradually rising from 65 to 67. Medicare is available at age 65. In both cases, the age is set in law, and Romney's suggestion that it be tied automatically to increases in the life expectancy of Americans would mark a major change.

He spoke in the run-up to a pair of primaries that mark his latest tests as he tries to break free of Rick Santorum and his other persistent but underfunded rivals in the presidential race.

He is widely expected to win Arizona. Neither he nor his rivals is airing television ads in the state, a reliable sign that all sides view it as a closed case.

Although public and private polls in Michigan show Romney has erased much or all of an earlier deficit, he still faces a stiff challenge from Santorum in the state, where the disparity in television advertising is not as overwhelmingly in Romney's favor has it has been elsewhere.

It is an unwritten rule of Michigan politics that presidential candidates appear before the Detroit Economic Club. Santorum addressed the group several days ago, and officials familiar with the details said Newt Gingrich's camp had been in discussions for an appearance as late as last week. A spokesman for the former House speaker did not respond to a request for comment.

Romney's commitment caused a spike in interest, and as a result, the former governor spoke in the huge stadium. He stood on a makeshift stage set up on the 35-yard line, with his audience on the stadium floor ringed by thousands of empty stadium seats. Goalpost uprights were visible above the black draping that served as his backdrop. United Auto Workers protested outside.

He spoke as Santorum intensified his effort to score an upset on what amounts to Romney's political home field.

The former Pennsylvania senator often stresses social issues in his campaign appearances. But public opinion polls consistently show the voters care most about the economy, and Santorum's campaign announced that later in the day, he would unveil an "economic freedom agenda" that he hoped to enact in his first 100 days in office.

By contrast, Romney rarely strays from economic issues as he presses his case that as a former businessman he is best equipped to help restore an economy still recovering from the worst recession in decades.

"I not only think I have the best chance. I think I have the only chance" of defeating Obama, Romney told his midday audience, although he quickly added with a nervous-sounding laugh, "Maybe I'm overstating it a bit."

While aides earlier had touted the speech as a major economic address, Romney seemed to pre-empt himself earlier in the week when he called for across-the-board income tax cuts of 20 percent to help the economy grow and begin creating jobs in large numbers.

He repeated that proposal, along with his calls to cut the corporate income tax rate and abolish the estate tax.

On Medicare, Romney also supports changing the program to give beneficiaries a choice between the traditional setup and one in which the government provides them with a monthly payment that can be used to purchase private coverage.

"With these commonsense changes, we will have fixed our balance sheet," Romney said. "Instead of $62 trillion in unfunded commitments hanging over America's future, we'll have a balance sheet that is actually in balance."

In all there are 30 Republican National Convention delegates at stake in Michigan next week, 29 in Arizona.

Are mobile bar codes changing the way consumers shop? - Mobile ...

Mobile bar codes are increasingly gaining momentum and companies such as Toys R Us and Glamour are placing them on billboards and walls ? providing consumers another way to shop their favorite products.

Although the technology is still emerging, it certainly has the opportunity to change the way consumers shop. Brands and marketers are beginning to see the potential of mobile bar codes and are using them in their marketing strategies.

?The immediacy of being able to purchase something you see advertised in a magazine or other out-of-home signage allows consumers to conveniently purchase the product on-the-spot, without having to search or step foot into a store,? said Nicole Skogg, CEO of SpyderLynk, New York .

?We believe that the use of mobile bar codes overall, especially mcommerce-enabled bar codes, will continue to grow as consumers become more familiar with the technology,? she said. ?Adoption rates will also continue to grow as marketers think more strategically about the use of bar codes and become more focused on delivering value.

?Well-executed, mobile bar codes drive consumer consideration and help position a brand as relevant and enticing. Poorly executed mobile bar codes, at best, serve to frustrate consumers and, at worst, are ignored all together.?

On the go shopping
Last year, Toys R Us rolled out a virtual store that let consumers scan QR codes featured on billboards and shop the company?s 2011 Hot Toy List.

On-the-go commuters and travelers in the New York metro area were encouraged to take part in the initiative. The billboards were located in John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and nearly 40 NJ Transit Stations feature the showcased items (see story).

Most recently, Glamour unveiled its Apothecary Wall that features products from Unilever and Juicy Couture.

The Apothecary Wall has SpyderLynk Snaptags next to each product. Users are encouraged to download Glamour?s Friends & Fans iPhone app to scan the mobile bar code and buy the featured product right then and there.

?Placement is critical to success in adoption rates,? Ms. Skogg said. ?One of our key messages to our clients is that the placement of a mobile bar code will drive usage.

?Engaged media such as magazines, email, online and street teams at events will drive higher response rates than passive media such as event displays and out-of-home signage like a billboard ? which is typically passed by rather than viewed from a closer proximity while standing still, making it difficult for consumers to engage,? she said. ?There are much more creative ways to deploy bar codes with the Apothecary Wall being an excellent example.

?Glamour?s innovative use of the Apothecary Wall allowed them to extend the reach of the magazine, while making it fun for consumers to shop on-the-spot. By recreating a shopping isle with a 2D design, the Apothecary Wall was intuitive, approachable and easy for consumers to interact with.?

Mobile sophistication
There is an increase in the sophistication of mobile bar codes and their implementation compared to last year.

Brands and marketers are incorporating mobile bar codes across their entire marketing mix.

This comprehensive approach to mobile is giving marketers the ability to model, segment and better target consumers.

Mobile commerce-enabled mobile bar codes give retailers the opportunity to extend the reach of their bricks-and-mortar retail outlets.

?We are beginning to see mobile bar codes have an impact on the retail experience however, there is still much consumer education and awareness needed for mobile bar codes to really change the way consumers shop,? said Laura Marriott, CEO of NeoMedia Technologies, Boulder, CO.

?Many major global brands and retailers, such as Calvin Klein, McDonalds, Macy?s and Target, have helped to increase this awareness by taking advantage of the ability mobile bar codes provide to bring engagement and interactivity to a consumer?s experience with a brand,? she said.

?By simply scanning the mobile bar code, consumers can instantly access an unlimited amount of data on the brand and product of interest ? from product information and reviews to special offers ? but further integration with a brand or retailer?s existing loyalty, CRM or couponing implementations will also help to drive consumer uptake.?

According to Ms. Marriott, mobile bar codes provide an easy, instant means to connect with the brand.

?I believe we will see significant uptake of these services,? Ms. Marriott said. ?Mobile bar codes still have a bit of the newness factor and are fun to engage with, which definitely also helps to drive interactions.

?And making the shopping experience even more accessible to consumers via mobile bar codes, is definitely a winning combination,? she said. ?We do expect to see these types of initiatives becoming more commonplace in the next year, which will help consumers become more comfortable with using their mobile to scan and buy on the go.

?In 2012 we should expect to see a rise in mobile bar code scanning implementations resulting in greater consumer participation, expanded loyalty initiatives and an overall enhanced consumer experience when in-store ? much more than a simple resolution to a Web URL.? Coupled with this, we expect to see hardware solutions in retail support mobile bar code scanning on a much wider basis in 2012.?

Mobile bar codes make shoppers more intelligent wherever they may be.

Consumers access more relevant content based on what their specific interests.

Additionally, with mobile bar codes shoppers can now access product reviews and price comparisons via their mobile device. This allows them to make more informed decisions on the spot when making a purchase.

?We do see some customers getting more comfortable buying products on their mobile devices, but we are not at the mass adoption level yet,? said Mike Wehrs, CEO of Scanbuy, New York. ?Thousands of people made purchases through our app over the holidays as they were scanning UPC codes from products, but there are many ways for retailers to harness that activity.

?Virtual shops are a growing phenomenon which can really enable someone to buy from anywhere,? he said.

Officials ponder next step after loss of redevelopment tools

via San Bernardino Sun

With the elimination of redevelopment agencies - the preeminent financing tool for local economic development in California - Inland Empire officials are just beginning to discuss how to make do without them.

"We'll be looking into the next generation of economic development tools," said Michael, who will meet with the group this week. "The purpose of the task force will be to explore recommendations to the Legislature that would be essential not only for local government but for the state of California to remain economically viable."

Redevelopment agencies, through the use of property tax increment revenue, were able to buy land and float bonds for major projects without having to ask voter permission to do so. The tax increment refers to additional taxes generated by a redevelopment-related project.

With these agencies, local officials in partnership with developers were able to finance major projects such as Victoria Gardens, Ontario Mills, some of the rehabilitation of the historic Fox Theatre in Pomona, regional storm drains, and affordable housing for the poor and seniors throughout the Inland Empire.

Michael said it was time to move forward on the path ahead.

"Continuing to argue with one another, filing litigation and challenging one another on the decision is in the past," Michael said. "Let's move forward and look for a new day. We're all here to make sure the state of California remains the Golden State and we have to?move forward in a positive manner to make sure we have the tools for economic development, infrastructure, housing, and for job creation. Those are the four critical elements we've lost."

Jim Kennedy, executive director of the California Redevelopment Association, and other experts said it will be tougher for successor agencies to raise money for projects.

"I know a number of cities have given serious thought to doing what they can with their own resources, not be beholden to the state for authority, and come up with creative ideas on their own, whether it's the use of their own general fund revenues, or a variety of financing districts that they have the authority to create," Kennedy said. "I think it's going to end up having people start giving a lot of serious consideration to tools that have been there a long time and not utilized as pervasively because they're not as effective. In the absence of RDAs, they rise on the feasibility list."

Rancho Cucamonga City Manager John Gillison said the idea is to re-establish a financing tool similar to the original tax increment funding mechanism in place for redevelopment since the 1950s, but there are no real specifics yet on how that might work.

"The conversation on what might take its place is at the very beginning phase," Gillison said. "It has to be statewide. Cities don't have other options. We can't do it on our own. It has to be authorized in the law."

In San Bernardino, redevelopment will be folded into city responsibilities, according to Jim Mulvihill, a redevelopment agency expert and professor of geography and environmental studies at Cal State San Bernardino. Mulvihill expects this to be the case throughout the state, with California cities creating new departments to handle the function of economic redevelopment.

"Ultimately, I just see the present economic development organizations being folded into being a department of city government," Mulvihill said. "Cities like San Bernardino are always going to need to be able to sell the city to developers, to get jobs and to promotes sales tax."

Redevelopment essentially took over a lot of the functions that cities provided anyway, Mulvihill said.

"The catch is that redevelopment had the tax increment," Mulvihill said. "They had a free hand to take all the additional taxes generated by these businesses to reinvest in their activities, whereas now, they're not going to have that."

Policymakers throughout the state aren't the only ones having to shift gears in the wake of the elimination of redevelopment agencies. The major project for political science professor Jason Neidleman's class has been for students to go to city hall and learn what they can about redevelopment agencies.

Now he must change his syllabus to ask students to find out what they can about how city managers will make do without them.

"You hear a lot of stories about California redevelopment agencies being abused to advance the agenda of the downtown elite, but more often than not, CRAs are used for their expressed purpose, which is to address blight, serve underrepresented communities, and maybe, more importantly than anything else, provide affordable housing in regions where there isn't enough."

Gov. Jerry Brown and the majority Democrats in Sacramento decided to do away with the state's redevelopment agencies this year in order to divert property tax funds to schools and public services as the state faces major budget shortfalls.

Local officials have derided the decision because issues of borrowed money and remaining revenue for existing projects remain unresolved. Regional leaders say they now lose the ability to finance major development projects, attract businesses and create jobs.

Proposed legislation in Sacramento seeks to retain remaining funds for affordable housing.
Assemblywoman Norma Torres, D-Chino, expects the proposed legislation, from Assembly Speaker John P rez, and Senate Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, to be heard through the Assembly Committee on Housing and Community Development sometime within the next month.

Both pieces of legislation, SB 654 and AB 1585, would allow $1.4 billion remaining in tax revenue, set aside for low and moderate income housing, to be used toward such projects.

Torres said she's receptive to the plan.

Ed Starr, Montclair city manager, said AB 1585 goes further than 654, in that it helps successor agencies to the former redevelopment agencies take care of existing contracts. Starr said the legislation would have to be passed as an urgency ordinance, with action needed soon before contract disputes and financing become more of an issue.

SB 986, which was recently introduced by state Sen. Bob Dutton, R-Rancho Cucamonga, also aims to close up unresolved bond issues. Under the law that shuts down redevelopment agencies, officials said they might have to be forced to write off money spent, and return borrowed money, which puts existing projects at risk.

Such projects in Rancho Cucamonga include an I-15 interchange project at Base Line Road, widening of Foothill Boulevard and storm drain work.

"Unfortunately, when the governor decided to end redevelopment, it was very disruptive and frankly you create a whole bunch more problems than what you're trying to solve," Dutton said. "My bill would provide clarity and would provide the ability to complete projects in the works, without litigation."

Motherhood?.my JOY, not my JOB - Working at home

I tried not to. I didn?t really want to.

?

But, when God keeps urging you, then keeps you up at night while filling your mind with the words He wants use to use?.well, you just can?t say no.

A little while ago, I came across yet another blog post from a Mama that speaks of how ?difficult? and ?energy-sapping? Motherhood is. It then goes on to elaborate her difficult days ad nauseam. This isn?t the first post I?ve read like this, and sadly, probably won?t be the last.

Some find this blog post funny, insightful, honest, and refreshing.

I personally find it sad. It really makes me want to cry.

Our sweet Rebecca perfecting the bottom lip stuck out?maneuver.

?

Sad that anyone thinks of Motherhood in these terms. Sad that Mamas out there aren?t truly seizing the day and truly enjoying each day they are granted to be with their sweet babes. Sad that SO many comments in support of such a life are written. Sad that this is thought of as the way things are and should be. Sad that SO many are seemingly missing out on the wonderfulness and awe that is Motherhood.

I dreamed of being a Mama my whole childhood. Being a Mama and wife to the man God chose for me were my life?s ambitions, my ?career? goals if you will. In high school, when they?d host Career Day, I?d hang out in the office with the ladies there. There was no career that interested me. While I had the grades needed to go to college, I simply could not justify the cost nor the time involved. I ?only? desired to become a wife and Mama.

Now, maybe it?s because my Mom was home with us and truly raised us, not just allowed us to grow up. Or maybe it?s because I just don?t ?dream big?. Or maybe it?s because I?m a child of the 70?s and life was still a slower pace with Moms at home for their children. Or maybe it?s because I was raised on a dairy farm, where hard work and togetherness were a necessity of daily life.

Whatever the reason, those were my goals. :)

I went on my first date when I was 19. I married that first date a year and a half later.

This photo was taken about 6 months after our first date. ?Yes, it was the time for big hair and big glasses? ;)

?

We?re still married and madly in love 21 years later. We?ve been blessed to be the parents of 5 children, four of whom we get to raise and one called to Jesus while still in my womb at 11 weeks old.

Yes, blessed. Abundantly so (hence the title of my blog!).

Has it always been an easy process? Nope. But, I wouldn?t trade raising my children for ANYTHING the world has to offer. They are my light, my joy, and my love. Being their Mama is the greatest honor I know.

I do remember the days of newborns, of toddlers, of 4 year olds, of potty training, of endless laundry, of endless diaper changes, of near exhaustion after a day of activities. It is work to both bring those sweet faces into the world and to mold them into responsible, mature human beings.

?Natalie after a LONG day of playing!

?

I have sometimes been accused of painting an inaccurate picture of motherhood. That I somehow look through rose-colored glasses when I speak of it. Nothing could be further from the truth.

My suggestions?
You aren?t getting enough sleep because your little one won?t sleep? Take him to bed with you (I personally feel that?s where he belongs when little anyhow). All of you will get more restful sleep. There, no more sleepless nights. No more zombie Mama the next day. What? You don?t want to share your bed with your babe? Why? They need you. How can you deny them their needs just because it?s at night? What? You don?t want a 6 year old sleeping with you still? We had all four of babes sleep with us. They are now aged 9-18 and none of them slept with us past the age of 2-1/2. In the grand scheme of things, 2-1/2 years out of 9 is not that much, 2-1/2 years out of 18 is even less. And, obviously, we were able to enjoy ?couple time? as we do have more than one child. ;)

?

Rebecca right where she belonged when sleeping?next to her Mama? ;)

?

You aren?t getting enough ?me? time? What exactly IS ?me? time?? For most who complain about a lack thereof, it?s time away from their children. Why exactly did you crave and desire to have children? Why do you want to be away from them? The time is fleeting. You may not realize it now with an infant, a toddler, or even a child just starting school. But it is slipping away far faster than you can imagine. This is the time to put aside some of those desires and just relish your incredibly important role as a Mama.

Sleeping angel Mary?.seems so long ago that this photo was taken.

?

You get tired of chasing 2 year olds, going to the grocery store and keeping track of everyone, or the noise? Let?s just say, some discipline and being consistent would alleviate most of those issues. (And before you say it, I realize there are children with medical issues that cannot control themselves with those methods?.I understand that and I?m not speaking to that. I?m speaking to normally developed children who simply lack consistent discipline). My children were never allowed out of my sight while out and about. They didn?t go to the next aisle over or anywhere else without me. My saying always was (and is), ?If I can?t see you, I don?t know that you are safe.? I did take the time, when we weren?t rushed, to visit the toy department, the pet department, or whatever department interested them at the time. I gave their needs and desires importance, just as I wanted them to give my needs of grocery shopping importance.

Thomas slip-sliding away at Aunt Penny?s.

?

I don?t mean this to be a condemnation on any Mama. Lord knows a stay at home Mama gets enough of that from the media and other sources. Our role is crucial to the well-being of our children, our next generation, our future. The time we invest today in our children will directly affect their future. They need us to mother them. They need us to teach them. They need us to show them that they are indeed important and loved.

Mary holding a butterfly.

?

All it takes is a quick look around to see those who do not have this at home. Our home should be a safe haven for all those in it. Peace should reign supreme over our home. Our children should know that their parents love and adore them?and that includes issuing discipline in love when necessary. Our children should be taught at home so that trips away from home, whether to the store, the library, or visiting friends & family, are fun, productive, and enjoyable for all. We never wanted to be ?that family? where folks would cringe at the thought of spending time with our family. We always went everywhere (and still do when we?re all home) as a ?pack?. If you saw one of us, you most likely saw all six of us.

Our family trip to the Parthenon in Nashville in 2010.

?

We did not and still do not allow bickering and fighting amongst our children. We told them each from the beginning that their siblings are their life-long friends and that they need each other till the end. This is not to say that it didn?t happen ever. It is to say that it was dealt with swiftly when it did. There?s no name-calling, belittling, or other such terrible things allowed. We are here to build each other up and love each other, not tear down. There?s enough tearing down that happens ?in the world?, it shouldn?t be happening in our homes, their safe haven.

Natalie?s 2nd birthday and Thomas? 6th birthday party. Yes, they do still treat each other as their best friends?.as they do their other two sisters.?

?

And, as a side note, there are TONS of women out there whose greatest dream is to be called Mama, yet for whatever reason, that dream has not been realized. Their hearts genuinely ache to hold a babe of their very own. I can only imagine how hard it is for them to hear Mamas complain about their ?job?.

So, yes, DO seize the day. Seize the moment. Seize the time you have been granted to be a Mama to your babes. They will not live with you forever. And you truly will look back one day and see that it was both worth it and not quite as bad as you imagined it to be. And, you might just be one of ?those? Mamas telling young Mamas to truly enjoy even ?those? moments. It?s over too quick, I tell ya.

The time truly is fleeting. That sweet babe with her lip stuck out at the beginning of this post? That?s her about a year ago on her first day of cosmetology school after graduating from our homeschool high school early. She?s now about 3 weeks away from cosmetology school graduation and ready to begin her working life.?

?

Receiving Very good Reviews Can Make Substantial Difference To ...

The gaming sector is one of the largest income earners from the entertainment market surpassing the revenue from Hollywood made films by a considerable amount at this point. The industry continues to grow, year on year despite the fact that the international economic climate is experiencing instances of depression and uncertainty. Leading franchises including Call of Duty and Battlefield not only create interest in the gaming online community itself, but their release has turned out to be traditional headlines and gets significant global curiosity. These types of substantial computer games regularly cost greater than $20m to deliver and can take a long time to create. The key gaming platforms made by Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo also compete vigourously when it comes to exclusivity across well-known game titles mainly because drive gaming system sales as well as improve general marketshare. Game titles such as Gears of War and Halo becoming just for Xbox 360 generate large excitement for the video games consoles and actually, Microsoft decided to buy the company who designed Halo just to ensure it is limited to Xbox 360 console and Windows systems. The video games industry event E3, which is organised every year in LA takes in around 100,000 delegates as well as media coming from all over the world. The game title publishers need big booths to showcase their particular new games and they also conduct ridiculous exclusive parties just for the video game mass media. A significant component of a title?s advertising budget can be allocated to this specific individual event. Create sufficient excitement and the video game is almost guaranteed vast coverage in the media and retail success. One particular important element in the association between press and the publishers is the video game reviews process. As soon as the title is practically ready regarding ultimate delivery, the developers push out very early versions for the most important video gaming press that review the video game before launch. A favorable overview in a very major publication on the internet and in print is the best advertising a video game could possibly get and everything?s done to ensure that the writers possess the essential access to the game along with production staff members so that they can meet their particular publication output deadlines just prior to release of the video game.

Dukane launches mobile charging carts for piles of iPads

Dukane MCC1Companies and schools that have bought into the whole iPad thing need a place to store and charge their tablets without running miles of extension cords and power strips. Dukane clearly sees an untapped market here, and has launched the MCCD1 and MCC1. Both are caster-mounted, fire and drill resistent cabinets designed to dock and lock piles of iPads. The MCCD1 has space for up to 32 of the iOS tablets and can both charge and sync them while keeping them organized and safe. The MCC1 holds just 30 and can't sync the slates, but it will keep them juiced and locked down between uses. The MCCD1 is available starting at $2,250 while the MCC1 is a slightly more affordable $1,260. Looking for more info? Hit up the source to download PDF fact sheets.

The Dave Factor: Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston passed away on Saturday from what has so far been determined to be a lethal combination of alcohol and prescription medication. ?There has been a media frenzy surrounding the 48-year old singers untimely death and, predictably, many people are using it as an opportunity to make a point. ?This blog post will be no exception.

First, to all the people on Facebook who keep posting statuses about how everyone should care about soldiers dying instead of Whitney - give it a rest. ?As human beings, we are all capable of feeling both empathy for Whitney Houston's family and sadness over her passing as well as empathy for the families of dead US soldiers and sadness over their deaths too. ?I'm not a huge Whitney Houston fan, I think she was a very talented singer and she certainly sang some songs that were big hits, but I don't have any Whitney in my iPod and I'm not going to start collecting her music now just because she's dead. ?However, I am an intelligent and reasonable enough person to understand that other people are big fans of her work and find her death to be a tragic loss to the music world and you know what, that's ok for people to feel that way. ?It's not a slap in the face of our troops for the news to make a big deal out of Whitney Houston's death. ?After all, she was a very big star and incredibly famous, in much the same way Michael Jackson was. ?Spending some time paying tribute to a famous artist and actress doesn't mean you don't care that there are soldiers halfway across the world fighting and dying without any fanfare. ?Yes, it sucks that our soldiers aren't more loved and idolized than they are, but you know what sucks even more? ?The fact that they're fighting and dying halfway across the planet over some bullshit. ?I would rather my friends in the military be home with their families, completely free of fanfare, than be the most famous people getting their limbs blown off by IEDs in Afghanistan.

Also, I agree, it sucks that the average soldier's pay is less than $40,000 a year while artists like Whitney Houston make millions and throw their lives away with drugs and alcohol. ?I'm not condoning or defending Whitney's actions. ?In fact, I think that anyone who can look at what happened to Heath Ledger, Britney Murphy and Michael Jackson (just to name a few) and still think that mixing prescription pills and alcohol is ok is a fucking idiot and they reap what they sow. ?However, it's not Whitney's fault that entertainers make more than soldiers. ?If you really have a problem with military compensation, then write your congressman and demand a substantial increase in soldier's pay. ?Offer to pay a monthly bill of some kind to augment the soldier's income, the same way paying your cable bill augments an entertainer's income. ?Or, if you want to split hairs and say that your tax dollars are that monthly bill, then write up a list of government services that you're willing to go without and get 51% of the voting public to agree with that list and go crazy. ?Yes, I know that's total bullshit, and so is bitching about the fact that celebrities make more money than soldiers. ?CEOs make more money than all of them put together, but you already know that because you posted the same status back when Steve Jobs died, only you changed the names and it said "made some computers" instead of "sang some songs" when you were trying to dismiss his impact on society.

Instead of getting on some soapbox whenever a famous person dies, just so you can post a snarky Facebook status and get a few friends to "like" it or reply with affirmation that they agree with your oversimplified, populist bitching - how about saying something about the soldiers - or anybody who's not rich and/or famous - when it's not going to result in you getting some attention? ?How about just be intellectually honest enough to admit you care about those soldiers about as much as you care about Whitney or Steve Jobs or any other famous person, that is to say that you will talk about them when they die and otherwise they almost never cross your mind?

What you are complaining about, really, is the fact that human value is measured in wealth, not worth.

That's why a celebrity who works on a film, tv show, album, etc. for a few months out of the year can become a millionaire who is idolized all over the world and who lives a life of luxury and personal entitlement and is exalted above the rest of society, while a soldier who spends a year and half getting shot at in a foreign and hostile nation can't even get a hometown parade when he is lucky enough to survive long enough to see the end of combat and get to return home to his family.

Society has decided that the celebrity who made millions is a better and more valuable member of society than the young soldier. ?Of course it's unfair and ridiculous, but that's the way you want it.

If you didn't, then why does it take the death of a celebrity to get you bitching about the deaths of our military men and women? ?Where were your posts about how shitty things are for the troops a week ago? Like I said, the majority of people who are so outraged over the attention Whitney Houston's death is getting are only looking for some attention themselves. ?It's sad, really.

Yes, I think it's bullshit that our soldiers make so little when they are asked to give so much.

Yes, I think it's bullshit that celebrities are so spoiled and entitled and recklessly irresponsible that they squander a life that most Americans can only dream of getting close to, let alone ever live in their lifetimes.

Yes, I think it's bullshit that the death of celebrities is front-page news and the deaths of soldiers aren't even televised.

Yes, I think that we have our priorities out of whack as a society when a drug-addicted celebrity dying is a national tragedy but an 18-year old kid getting blown away in Afghanistan is "Thursday".

But, I'm sure as hell not going to post some snarky copy/paste Facebook status about it, because the only thing that would accomplish is getting people to pay attention to me for a few minutes and that seems a little selfish and hypocritical.

For the people who truly loved and connected with Whitney Houston's music, this is a sad time. ?Just like the fans of Michael Jackson, Whitney's fans have lost their hero and inspiration. ?A lot of young women who are very successful and accomplished in the music industry today were inspired to get into the business by Whitney Houston and certainly they are not all drug addicts living on borrowed time. ?Though she may have struggled with her own personal demons, Whitney Houston was an inspiration and a source of joy and entertainment for millions of people. ?Her fame and fortune are a testament to that fact. ?It is possible to both mourn her passing and acknowledge that there are many brave men and women dying every day in the service of our country. ?The media frenzy surrounding Whitney Houston is not a slap in the face of our military, it's a tribute to a great talent who left a tremendous impact on the world of music and entertainment. ?If you're still outraged about this a week after Whitney's not in the news anymore, then come talk to me. ?Until then, get over yourself.

Bernard-Henri Lévy: What Is Really Happening in Athens

The Greek Parlement's vote, during the night of Sunday to Monday, on the austerity plan the European Union demanded as a prerequisite to the release of a new installment of financial assistance was inevitable. Clearly, the alternative to the austerity plan was, in the short term, exclusion from the eurozone, leading to bankruptcy and the consequent plunge into a state of poverty even more unbearable than what the country faces today. And one finally understands that the negligence of successive governments in Athens for the past 30 years -- their demagoguery, their clientelism, their bad faith, and their short-sighted policies -- have forced their partners to raise their voices.

Nonetheless.

In an affair like this one, which is political as much as economic, and where the highly inflammable matter being toyed with is a people, their pride, their memory, their revolt, their survival, one would like to have seen things handled more deftly.

In such a declaration by German or French leaders, a tone free of contempt, less like a diktat, would have been appreciated. One would have preferred that they not contemplate the replacement of the Greek finance minister by a European commission, the very idea of which could only be perceived as a useless form of humiliation. More importantly, one would have wished that the bureaucrats responsible for the plan not throw health expenditures in with the indispensable and just measures for drastic reduction, placing them on the same level as the wasteful spending of a state given to excess. In other words, we would like to be sure that those charged with evaluating the country to save it from bankruptcy had no other choice but to make cuts blindly, reducing the budget for the most essential public services, those upon which the bio-political survival of its citizens depend, as much as, say, defense.

At the same time, we should be certain that these evaluators are themselves adequately informed of the diabolically complex mechanism that they are implementing by compelling Greece to reimburse its new debt while facing the growth that this new bludgeoning will automatically cause to contract, and that its effect will not be to bring the country to the level of debt in 2020 that it faced in 2009, before the "bailout."

In any event, it is regrettable that this crisis is not the occasion, not only in Greece but throughout Europe, for a vast democratic debate, whose results might be: 1) an actual auditing of this debt, so that the electorate has the right to know its history and how it spiralled (incidentally, isn't this the only way to make them a part of the implementation of the plan that, for the moment, is imposed upon them?); 2) a division of responsibility among governments (socialist as well as conservative), bankers (including those who have been recycled to head international institutions and who, all of a sudden, are wagging their fingers at the Greeks), and local social categories (who have turned fiscal fraud into an art form, and continue to do so); or 3) the vision not of the choice but of the choices that were available and remain so to this society gripped in a stranglehold (choice, yes, this deliberation by citizens among a variety of possibilities, even if reduced, that is the essence of democracy as invented, precisely, by the Greeks, and from which no state of emergency can exempt those who govern).

All that is not a question of style but of substance, and even of destiny, first of all because the images transmitted from Athens are not those of simple demonstrations but of a social tie that is disintegrating, exploding, dissolving -- and it's like the end of a world; and then because, if the people are not always right, one is never right when against the people -- except in resignation to its hurling itself into one or another form of this naked abhorrence, with neither words nor faith, this strange, suicidal whirling of passions that are dead and, paradoxically, all the more virulent, which is the eternal refuge of worn-out societies indifferent to the form of chaos they choose or, in reaction to chaos, to that of their chosen tyranny; and finally because the entire continent finds itself confronting this politically, morally, and metaphysically unbearable perspective. Europe had, among other virtues (including peace and prosperity), that of reconciling with the practice of freedom peoples, both to the south and to the east, who had been more or less deprived of it for a long while. And now the same institutions, the same community rules, the same currency -- in short, the same Europe -- would have the inverse effect, because it would plunge a member country into anarchy, or into forced order, a dictatorship, even fascism -- which amounts to the same thing.

This would be a failure whose shock waves, really, would far surpass those of the simple rupture of an economic and monetary union. And for the "good Europeans" whom Nietzsche predicted would be the only ones to hold back the flood of nihilism, when the time came, this would be a nearly unimaginable yet very real irony of History. But the worst is never certain. And there is still a little time to save, together, the dream of our illustrious pioneers.

Josie Feria: Create Your Own Spa At Home

In today's stress-filled world, a visit to a spa can provide much-needed rejuvenation for body and soul. While there is no substitute for being pampered by someone else's hands, other factors such as one's busy schedule and fluctuation in one's wallet do not always make that possible. Below is a step-by-step guide to recreate two of the most popular spa treatments at home -- a facial and a dry pedicure.

At-home facial treatment

Items Needed:

? Cleanser

? Toner and cotton pads

? Deep cleansing scrub or clay mask or hydrating mask

? Steaming pot of water -- preferably as wide as face

? Aromatherapy oil or chamomile tea

? Towel large enough to cover head

? Washcloth

? Moisturizer or hydrating serum -- optional

Steps:

? Cleanse face with cream cleanser or gel -- thoroughly rinse off.

? Using cotton pad apply toner to entire face to remove any traces of cleanser avoiding eyes -- this can be a floral water or witch hazel.

? Put water to boil in pot until very hot and cover with lid to prevent from cooling off -- for purposes of scent drop in a couple of drops of aromatic oil or place chamomile tea bags in the water to steep.

? Apply clay or hydrating mask or facial scrub -- avoiding eyes with emphasis on any area that's more congested, meaning has more breakouts or blackheads.

? Allow mask to remain 10 minutes -- for added relaxation apply cold chamomile tea bags or cool cucumbers to eyes and lay back.

? Uncover pot and place face directly over steaming water with towel over head to create a "steam cocoon" -- allow vapor to soften the mask and massage into skin as a needed.

? Rinse off mask and remove thoroughly with wash cloth then apply toner to remove all traces.

? Apply day or night moisturizer or allow refreshed skin to breathe.

Dry pedicure

Items Needed:

? Pumice stone or foot scraper -- not wet

? Scrub cream

? Pail with hot water / bathtub

? Moisturizing cream or oil

? Emery board and orange stick and buffer

? Clippers or scissors

? Towels and plastic bags plus socks

? Optional -- cool chamomile bags or cool cucumber slices, salts/aroma oil

Steps:

? Without soaking feet (dry), use using pumice stone or callous polishing paddle massage entire feet to remove dry scaly skin and reveal new soft skin.

? Apply scrub to feet with massage action and wrap in plastic and warm socks -- to warm socks place in microwave for 30 seconds on high.

? Allow scrub to remain on skin for about five minutes -- to add to relaxation and reduce any puffiness to eye area lay back and place tea bags or cool cucumbers on eyes.

? Take off socks and plastic and once again massage scrub into skin, then rinse off with warm water.

? Place feet in hot water in tub or pail and soak -- to enhance the effects of the water you may add hydrating oil or salts to the water.

? Soak feet for at least five minutes, towel dry and use orange stick to push back cuticles and scissors or clippers to trim back nails, remembering to trim across (square) to avoid ingrown nails.

? Use emery or buffer to file to perfection -- rinse again, dry thoroughly and apply moisturizing lotion or mask and replace warm socks for comfort and to help lotion penetrate skin.
