Iran unveils upgraded short-range missile

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's president on Tuesday unveiled an upgraded version of a short-range surface-to-surface ballistic missile just weeks after it was test-fired, the country's state-media reported.

At the ceremony for Fateh-110, or Conqueror, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told a group of defense officials that Iran wants to advance its defense technology "not in an aggressive context, but as a deterrence."

"We do not seek it for conquest, domination of neighboring countries and the world. We do not want it because of defiance," said Ahmadinejad, according to state TV.

Iran considers both the United States and Israel as potential adversaries. Neither country has ruled out a military strike against Iran's nuclear program, which they claim is aimed at developing nuclear weapons. Iran says its program is for peaceful purposes.

The official IRNA news agency reported Tuesday that the new version of Fateh-110 has a quicker launch capability, a longer life and can be used in adverse weather conditions, but gave no other details. The missile has been in service in Iran over the past decade.

Iran claimed earlier in August that it successfully test-fired the missile, saying at the time that Fateh-110 has an improved accuracy to strike land and naval targets within a 300 kilometer (185 mile) range.

Since 1992, Iran has tried to set up a self-sufficient military program. The country's military leaders have said they believe future wars will take place in the air and on sea, and Tehran has sought to upgrade its air defense systems and naval power in anticipation of such a possibility.

Iran has also been pushing to upgrade its missiles, which already can target Israel and U.S. bases in the Middle East. The Pentagon released a report in June noting significant advances in Iranian missile technology, acknowledging that the Islamic Republic has improved the accuracy and firing capabilities of its missiles.

At Tuesday's ceremony marking the national day of Iran's defense industry, Ahmadinejad also unveiled several other new Iranian-made weapons, such as a naval diesel engine, a mortar launcher, a monitoring military intelligence system and tactical SUVs.

Defense Minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi said Iran will commission a new generation of fighter jets, missiles, unmanned drones and submarines by the Iranian New Year, which falls in March 2013.

Iran's purported military advancements are impossible to independently verify because the country does not release technical details of its arsenals or rely on equipment from major international defense contractors.

Tehran occasionally announces additions to its arsenal, holds inauguration ceremonies, starts up new production lines and test-fires new missiles.

Dan Cirucci: Great Graphic Art Headed To Phila. Museum Of Art

Works of Visionary Graphic Artists Paula Scher and Seymour Chwast Presented Together in Museum Exhibition for the First Time
Double Portrait:? Paula Scher and Seymour Chwast, Graphic Designers
(December 2, 2012, through April 14, 2013) Philadelphia Museum of Art

Illustrator Seymour Chwast is graphic designer Paula Scher?s greatest influence, and also happens to be her husband. With a shared sensibility and approach to design, their work has transformed the fields in which they practice.

Double Portrait:? Paula Scher and Seymour Chwast, Graphic Designers celebrates the achievements of this remarkably creative couple, whose illustrations and designs will be shown together for the first time. The exhibition in the Collab Gallery of the Museum?s Ruth and Raymond G. Perelman Building will include more than 300 images, selected and installed by Chwast (b.1931) and Scher (b. 1948). On Saturday, December 1, they will be honored with the Design Excellence Award given by Collab, the group of design professionals and enthusiasts that supports the modern and contemporary design collection at the Museum.

?Thanks to the efforts and generosity of Collab, we are the only Museum in the country to regularly devote our galleries to exhibitions about contemporary designers,? notes Kathryn Bloom Hiesinger, Curator of European Decorative Arts after 1700. ?It is an extraordinary opportunity to be able to view Scher and Chwast?s work, side by side, in a museum setting. Seen in concert, their iconic images, social commentary, and commercial relevance speak to graphic design?s ability to transcend the medium?s perceived boundaries.?

Both Chwast and Scher understand graphics as expression, very often comic expression, and are drawn to eclectic influences and conceptual methods. Double Portrait explores the artists? commonalities and differences in works ranging from record albums, books, magazine covers, and illustrations to posters, typefaces, trademarks, identities, and environmental graphics shown in videos and in the gallery.

The exhibition will demonstrate how Chwast?s vision was, and remains, deeply personal, inspired by sources as diverse as German Expressionist woodcuts, Victorian typography, children?s art, primitive art, folk art, and comic books. On view will be one of Chwast?s most iconic and still provocative works of the 1960s, his anti-war poster ?End Bad Breath? (1968), designed in protest of the U.S. bombing of Hanoi. Both cartoon and illustration, the poster features Uncle Sam centered like the sun against a background of thick rays, his hugely open mouth filled with bombs and bombers. In his poster ?War is Good Business: Invest Your Son? (1967), Chwast used a collage style of Victorian wood-block typography, photography, and bright color to create a dense, visually busy surface that activates his ironic text message.

Scher is best known for her innovative reimagining of typography as a communicative medium, her work divided largely between the fields of graphic identity and environmental graphics. Her identity program and posters for New York?s Public Theater (from 1994), will be featured in Double Portrait, including the graphic language designed for The Public Theater which reflects street typography with unconventional placements and uses of different sizes, weights, and styles of type. Her poster for the theater?s production of ?Bring in ?Da Noise, Bring in ?Da Funk? (1995) sets the play?s title and theater logos around the silhouetted image of the tap artist in different visual rhythms which convey the sound of the performance. Scher?s environmental graphics for the New Jersey Performing Arts Center?s Lucent Technologies Center for Arts Education (2001), utilizes super graphics to redraw the exterior of the sixty-year old school building in typography with painted words loudly announcing the school?s program as ?Theater, Music, Dance.?

Hornets give coach Monty Williams 4-year extension

NEW ORLEANS ? Hornets coach Monty Williams has agreed to a four-year contract extension that would keep him in New Orleans through 2016.

The deal announced by the club Sunday morning comes as the 40-year-old Williams heads into the final year of the contract he received when he took his first NBA head coaching job in New Orleans in 2010.

The Hornets did not release contract terms, but Williams confirmed the length of the extension in a text message to The Associated Press.

Williams took the Hornets to the playoffs his first season with a 46-36 record. Last season, the club went 21-45 after trading star Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Clippers in a deal that helped New Orleans build for the future with the acquisition of 23-year-old shooting guard Eric Gordon and an additional first-round draft choice.

The Hornets then won the NBA?s draft lottery and selected Kentucky star Anthony Davis first overall and added Duke?s Austin Rivers with the 10th pick.

This offseason, the Hornets have also traded to acquire forward Ryan Anderson from Orlando and center Robin Lopez from Phoenix.

"The Hornets have a promising future and an exciting young nucleus," said Hornets executive vice president Mickey Loomis. "It is our opinion that Monty is the perfect coach to develop and lead this group of talent going forward."

Loomis, also the general manager of the New Orleans Saints, was placed in his oversight position with the Hornets after Saints owner Tom Benson bought the basketball team from the NBA, ending a period of ownership uncertainty that had made it difficult for Hornets general manager Dell Demps to acquire or keep established players in free agency. Forward David West cited the lack of a long-term owner as a factor in his decision to leave New Orleans for Indiana in free agency last year.

"I would like to thank Mr. Benson, his family, Mickey and Dell for putting their trust in me and showing me their commitment," Williams said in a statement released by the club. "The love and support the city and its fans have shown me and my family in the time we have been here has been incredible and I look forward to continuing to work to make the city and the Benson family proud of the Hornets."

Williams came to the Hornets after five seasons as the assistant coach in Portland under then-head coach Nate McMillan.

Williams played in the NBA for 10 years after the New York Knicks made the former Notre Dame standout a first-round pick in 1994. His playing career also included stints with the San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers [team stats].

Williams came to the Hornets at a time when the club was up for sale by founder George Shinn. During his first season, the NBA stepped in to buy the club in hopes of stabilizing club finances and orchestrating a deal with a new, permanent owner committed to keeping the team in Louisiana long-term.

At the time, Williams? peers would often say they felt sorry for him having to start his head coaching career amid such instability, but Williams never complained, saying he felt lucky to be getting paid well to do something he loved. His players routinely professed their admiration for Williams? approach and always seemed to play hard for him.

Even as the end of last season approached, with the Hornets well out of the playoff hunt, they finished with eight victories in their final 13 games.

It was around that time that Benson agreed to buy the club for $338 million and also agreed to a lease extension through 2024 at the New Orleans Arena. Soon after, Benson and Loomis said they planned to retain Williams.

"We could not be any happier to have someone of Monty?s quality - both professionally and personally - involved in the resurgence of this franchise," Benson said.

How to Use LinkedIn for Business Networking | BzzHive - Harris ...

I want to use LinkedIn for networking. What are some tips for?getting value from?it?

Key Takeaways:

  • Sharing resources and advice to increase value
  • Using LinkedIn to set up face-to-face meetings
  • LinkedIn (and general social media) etiquette

Not so long ago, Rotary clubs and chamber events were the way to connect with professionals in the business community. And while traditional social network groups are still strong in many areas, virtual communities, like LinkedIn social networking, are fast becoming the small business pro?s place for building a network. Here are strategies for navigating the world?s largest business social media website:

Become the go-to person.

The best relationships in life involve give and take. And that concept extends to networking with LinkedIn. Build professional relationships by looking for ways to help connections and other members. Share a resource with a colleague who posted a discussion question or provide insight on a connection?s exasperated status update. Each time you share genuinely helpful expertise on the business social media site, you boost your value within the community.

Take it face to face.

Use LinkedIn social networking to set up face-to-face time with connections. Use the site?s Events app to review listings for seminars, conferences, or meet-ups. If you see an event you?re attending, scope the RSVP list to find out which of your connections are also attending. Send a message to let them know you?ll be at the event and would welcome the chance to meet for pre-session coffee or connect over happy hour.

Be nice.

Being nice is a LinkedIn social networking tactic? Yes. When we communicate online, our brains sometimes perceive that we?re talking to a computer screen and not with an actual person. The result can be brusque or less-than-mannered messages. And while most small business owners and decision makers are professional enough to avoid outright rudeness, it?s easy to make etiquette errors on a business social media network.

Networking with LinkedIn will only be a success if you interact with the manners your mom taught you?and then some:

  • Be wary of using sarcasm, especially with connections you don?t enjoy a close relationship with.
  • Use professional business writing skills (i.e. avoid the LOLs and LMAOs unless it?s a close colleague).
  • Respond to requests for introductions and recommendations quickly and professionally. If you?re unable to help the person, politely let him or her know.
  • Be aware of time, cultural, and regional differences.

Don?t be pitchy.

Think of LinkedIn social networking as a virtual business lunch or networking event. You wouldn?t dream of walking up to a person you?ve just met and saying, ?Here, look at my product.? Instead use LinkedIn interactions, like those on Answers or discussions, to share information. Successfully networking on LinkedIn is a product of building relationships and establishing credibility?not pitching the hard sell.

Want to build a network of professionals who will help you grow your small business? Networking on LinkedIn?s business social media site may be one of the tools you need. So get out there and start connecting!

The tyrant and the man of god: Russia's sinister marriage of church and state

Russian President Putin

President Vladimir Putin: looking to the heavens for guidance? Photograph: Sergei Karpukhin/REUTERS

In her statement to a nobbled judge hearing a trumped-up charge before a kangaroo court, Yekaterina Samutsevich explained why she had "blasphemed". The secular forces of oppression at Putin's disposal were not enough for him, she said with remarkable lucidity given her perilous circumstances. He wanted "transcendental guarantees of his long tenure at the pinnacle of power" too. The Orthodox church, "associated with the heyday of imperial Russia, where power came not from earthly manifestations such as democratic elections and civil society, but from God Himself", now gave credulous believers religious reasons to support the crime gang in the Kremlin.

Pussy Riot had staged many protests. Revealingly, the security apparatus came for Samutsevich and her sisters after a 30-second stunt in Moscow's Christ the Saviour Cathedral. It hit a nerve by striking at Russia's union of church and state ? of patriarch and oligarch ? into a common reactionary front.

"Holy Mother, Blessed Virgin, chase Putin out," they sang. The Holy Mother remained as elusive as ever, but Kirill I, Patriarch of Moscow, is more than content to keep Putin's money launderers in the Temple. He has struck a deal. Putin offers the Orthodox church a partial restoration of its tsarist privileges: state aid for the restoration of churches the communists destroyed; and the return of priests to the schools and universities. Kirill returns the favour by making support for the Kremlin kleptomaniacs a quasi-religious duty. Everyone quotes his statement that Putin's rule was a "miracle of God". But they miss the hysterical assertion that before Putin's divine intervention Russia was in as bad a state as when the Nazis invaded in 1941. Those who protested against Putin's rigged election, continued Vsevolod Chaplin, spokesman for the Moscow patriarchate, were comparable to foreign agents. They were "under the influence of puppet masters" ? manipulated and suspect.

Russian Orthodoxy has always been a state religion. The communists persecuted believers, but the KGB found many collaborators in the church who were prepared to put obedience to established power first. For this reason, it is a mistake to dismiss Kirill's support for Putin as simple cynicism. He believes in autocracy and hates liberalism as much as his predecessors did and Putin does. That Kirill is liberalism's avowed enemy becomes clear from reading his Freedom and Responsibility: A Search for Harmony. If its Amazon ranking is a guide, hardly any English reader has glanced at it, which is a pity because although the cleric's arguments are drear when they are not repellent, they provide as a good an illustration as any of how opposition to human rights can be covered with smells and bells.

"The most fundamental conflict of our present era is the clash between the liberal mode of civilisation on the one hand and national culture and religious identity on the other," Kirill begins. To which one can only say that he is right and that he is also fighting for the wrong side. I must emphasise that by liberalism the patriarch does not mean rampant individualism but any human society that tolerates "sin" providing sinners "remain within the law of land and do not harm others". No charge is too wild to throw at such hell holes. "The human rights concept is used to cover up lies, falsehood and insults against religion and national values," Kirill fumes. Secularism is diseased ? "infected with the bacillus of self-destruction". Secular countries allow women to control their fertility and tolerate homosexuality. They are nominally free "but defenceless against evil".

The cleric barely makes an effort to disguise how Russia's dark traditions of occidentalism and antisemistim have influenced his thought. Universal values are the product of a malign, alien ideology that comes from the western "protestant" theologians and ? but, of course ? "Jewish philosophers". The Orthodox church can accept liberalism in the far-off lands of Europe and North America. But in Russia they "cannot stay silent when norms contradicting the foundation of the Orthodox faith are imposed on them". This is the "multi-polarism" of Putin's foreign ministry in clerical vestments. Liberal standards have no place in Russia.

As always, the trouble with cultural exceptionalism is that it has no honest way of arguing with members of that culture who want change. You can search Patriarch Kirill's writings in vain for any acknowledgement that Russians who protest against corruption or the denial of democratic rights or the crimes of the wars in the Caucasus have a case that deserves a hearing. They are just the tools of "puppet masters"; the propagators of the debased ideologies of "protestant theologians" and "Jewish philosophers".

Kirill's writing reveals one of Russia's most sinister characteristics. A regime of former KGB officers and plutocrats is robbing the country blind, while the leadership of the national church supports the thieves and denounces their opponents.

At least the patriarch has made it clear that he is liberalism's enemy. The great wet blanket that covers criticism of religion in democracies makes returning that enmity a struggle. Overpaid and undereducated commentators in the half-serious media denounce criticism of religion as a form of racism. So I suppose that before I am accused of possessing a phobia about Orthodoxy, I must add that Putin was able to count on the support of Russia's craven chief rabbi, Berel Lazar, who told him that because protests had taken place on Saturday (the Jewish sabbath) they were "not a Jewish business".

The regime could also line up a procession of mullahs and lamas to support it. The toleration of tyranny is an ecumenical business in Russia. Nor does indulgence stop at Russia's borders. The English translation of Kirill's fulminations carries a foreword by Richard Chartres, the silly and faintly disgraceful Anglican Bishop of London. He offers no criticism of the patriarch. Instead, he praises his "acute intelligence".

The most ignorant political insult of our time must be the charge of "militant atheism" that invariably follows the accusation of racism. What else is there to say about it? The Soviet communists who murdered Christians, Jews and Muslims were militant atheists. They persecuted others because of their beliefs. Who are the communists' successors today? If you do not know, I suggest that you direct your inquiries to Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich. After two years "corrective labour" in a "penal colony", they may be able to reply.

China's Hu gives show of support for North Korea

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's President Hu Jintao on Friday met the powerful uncle of North Korea's young leader Kim Jong-un, in a clear show of support for the impoverished ally as it takes tentative steps to rebuild its shattered economy.

The uncle, Jang song-thaek, is seen as a driving force for reforms which the isolated and destitute North is believed to be trying and for which it desperately needs Chinese backing.

"For many years, Comrade Jang Song-thaek has done a great deal of work to develop neighborly friendship between China and North Korea," Hu said at their meeting, according to Chinese radio.

Hu also offered condolences for floods that recently hit the North, which routinely struggles to feed its 24 million people.

"I'm confident that under the leadership of the Korean Workers' Party with Kim Jong-un as its First Secretary, the North Korean people will be able to overcome this flood disaster and build a beautiful homeland."

Jang's trip to China this week has been seen as the latest sign that Kim is seriously exploring ways to revive his reclusive country's economy, which has been in decline for years.

Jang attended meetings to discuss joint economic projects in Rason on the North's east coast, and in Hwanggumphyong, an area on the border between the two countries.

Chinese state news agency Xinhua quoted Hu as saying that he "hopes the two sides can make full use of their respective advantages ... (and) push forward in the cooperation of the two key economic zone projects."

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who also met with Jang, said the Chinese government "will firmly support North Korea's economic development and improvement of people's livelihoods".

Companies from China and North Korea opened on Friday a new tourist route from Yanji, a city in China's northeast Jilin province that borders the North, to Rason to boost economic and tourism exchanges between the two countries, Xinhua said in a separate report.

"The new international route will turn a new page in trade and tourism cooperation between the two countries," Xinhua cited Wang Yanbo, deputy director of the Yanji Tourism Administration, as saying.

North Korea relies on China to support its economy, which has been dragged down by decades of mismanagement and international sanctions over its weapons programs.

Kim's father, who died last December, flirted with reform but never really let it take root, wary of anything that might undermine his family's iron grip over the state.

But the new leader has presented a different image to his father and is believed to want economic and agricultural reform.

North Korea has received little more than $300 million in non-financial direct investment from about 100 Chinese companies mainly in the food, medicine, electronics, mining, light industry, chemicals and textile sectors.

Twitter: Mars rover Curiosity spoof video goes viral

NEW YORK: A Seattle-based comedy group has paid a hilarious tribute to Nasa's Mars rover Curiosity team in the wake of the country's obsession with its landing on August 5.

Using the beat from LMFAO's 'I'm Sexy and I Know It', the group parodied everything from the space agency's blue polo shirts to the Curiosity's landing, the New York Daily News reported.

The spoof video shows a group of "NASA" members hard at work on landing the Mars rover, touting their space skills in rap form.

"I got stars on my 'hawk and I ain't afraid to show it," sings a spiky-haired impersonator of NASA's leading heartthrob, Bobak Ferdowsi, who shot to nationwide fame after video of him the night of the landing lit up the internet.

The chorus of the catchy tune, of course, is, "We're NASA and we know it."

In the video, the group - suited up in NASA-esque blue polo shirts and sitting in a dummy control room - dance through the streets and rap their space terms alongside the beat.

"This is how I rove, bakin' red rocks in my nuclear stove," one lyric goes, accompanied by cute animations.

The group also show off some synchronised dance moves, featuring a woman in an American flag bikini and a man in an astronaut-style orange jumpsuit.

The video was put together by Seattle-based comedy group Satire, with the role of Bobak played by web video comedian David Hudson.

It got a stamp of approval from both NASA's official Twitter account and the verified account for the rover itself, which both retweeted the link to the legions of space fans who have been extremely vocal in their passion for all things Curiosity since the Mars landing.

"This fan-made video is AWESOME (and I know it.)" the rover tweeted, adding the hashtag "#wiggle #wiggle #wiggle as another nod to the LMFAO song.

The real Bobak Ferdowsi, also gave the video a thumbs up.

"Well played!" Ferdowsi tweeted.

"Video is hilarious and awesome, but don't know that we can dance like that (see high5s for ref)," he added, poking fun at himself and his team for their well-chronicled awkward high-fives the night of the Rover landing.

Football Faceplant: Israel Keeper Dudu Aouate Reenters Earth?s Atmosphere Face First vs Hungary (Video)

By Chris Wright

In which, during what Google Translate reliably informs us was a ?trivial test match? between Israel and Hungary on Wednesday night, Israeli ?keeper Dudu Aouate goes up and over the top of Hungary striker?Adam Szalai, only to crash back down to terra firma face first and in sickening fashion?

There?s no way this didn?t hurt like hell. thankfully, both players ? though a little woozy for a while ? were able to continue playing. For the record, the game finished 1-1.

Young immigrants can avoid deportation under new U.S. program

MIAMI (Reuters) - Marlon Morraz, 19, an undocumented immigrant from Nicaragua, wasted no time to sign up for temporary legal status in the United States under the Obama administration's relaxed deportation rules that took effect on Wednesday.

"Now is my chance," he said after picking up an application form at an immigration workshop hosted by a Miami congressman. "I'm pretty elated. Now I have a future."

Morraz, who has been living under the radar since he came to the country when he was 11, is among hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants expected to file applications with the Department of Homeland Security under the new rules.

The "deferred action for childhood arrivals" permits shield them from deportation for at least two years as long as they were younger than 16 when they came to the United States, have lived in the country since June 15, 2007, have not been convicted of a felony, and are not older than 30.

Lines of eager, young undocumented students formed outside immigration offices in states with big immigrant populations such as California and Texas on Wednesday.

As many as 1.7 million people could qualify for the temporary program, which enables them to apply for work permits, Social Security cards and driver's licenses, according to the Pew Hispanic Center.

President Barack Obama, whose administration has aggressively deported illegal immigrants with criminal backgrounds, announced in June that he was moving to help this group of youths - many of them Hispanic - who have become increasingly vocal in calling for help.

Many Republicans blasted the move as the Democratic president's grab for Hispanic votes ahead of the November 6 presidential election, with an eye on battleground states such as Florida, Nevada and Colorado with big immigrant populations.

Morraz, who graduated from high school last year with advanced credits, had to turn down university opportunities at Boston College and the University of Chicago, because his lack of status made him ineligible for financial assistance.

"I started to stop caring about education. I thought it was a waste of time, it just fills your head with dreams for nothing," he said.

A PATH

Now he has enrolled at a community college to study international relations, and has revived his university dreams with hopes one day of becoming a diplomat.

"Now I have a future. I'm on a path," he said.

The federal policy change has been warmly received by Latino leaders, but has been derided by some Republicans as "backdoor amnesty."

Immigration advocates are not entirely satisfied either, calling the policy just a partial implementation of the Dream Act, a bill stalled in the U.S. Congress that seeks to create a permanent legal status for the undocumented children of immigrants who entered the country illegally.

"It's like a Band-Aid," said Daniela Pelaez, 18, a Colombian-born student who came to Miami at age 4. "It's only temporary and we don't know what happens in two years time."

Pelaez and her sister received a 30-day deportation order in February and led a public battle to stay in the country after Daniela was elected to deliver her high school's valedictorian commencement speech.

Pelaez was awarded a full scholarship to Dartmouth to study molecular biology and won a separate appeal for deferred action in March, spurring calls for the Obama administration to apply the remedy more broadly. She starts at Dartmouth in two weeks and hopes to become a heart surgeon.

"All these children have the ability to be great Americans. The only question is whether we give them that opportunity," said U.S. Representative David Rivera, a Florida Republican who hosted Wednesday's workshop to advise applicants for the program.

"I'm not so concerned about the mechanics of how this was done," he added, referring to criticism of president Obama's executive order, "as much as I am about it's being a foundation for a permanent solution."

Advocates are urging young immigrants to have their applications reviewed by an attorney before filing them.

"Mistakes or misunderstandings could lead to denial of deferred action and losing the $465 fee or worse - deportation," said Cheryl Little, director of Americans for Immigrant Justice. "This is a marathon, not a sprint."

San Antonio, Texas, resident Benita Veliz, 27, hoped to take advantage of the program. She arrived in the United States from her native Mexico with her illegal immigrant parents when she was 8. Since then, she said she has completed high school and college but has been unable to get a driver's license or travel.

"This will allow me to do the things I've always wanted to do and live out the American dream like I've always wanted," she said.

AP source: Michael J. Fox returning to series TV

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Michael J. Fox is planning a return to series TV, more than a decade after he left to concentrate on fighting Parkinson's disease.

The actor, who first gained fame in the 1980s sitcom "Family Ties" and later headlined "Spin City," will star in a comedy that's in development at Sony Pictures Television for 2013, according to people with knowledge of the project.

The people, who lacked authority to publicly discuss the matter, spoke Wednesday on condition of anonymity. The project has drawn strong interest from the major networks, they said.

The actor's publicist did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Sony declined comment.

Fox, 51, who starred in the hit "Back to the Future" movie franchise, is working with Will Gluck, director of the film "Easy A," and writer Sam Laybourne, whose credits include "Cougar Town" and "Arrested Development," the people said.

The actor, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1991, left "Spin City" in 2000 and said he intended to focus on helping find a cure for the disease. He started a foundation, which bears his name, to fund research toward that goal.

Although he reduced his workload because of Parkinson's, Fox has made guest appearances on TV series including "Rescue Me," ''Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "The Good Wife."

In May, Fox told ABC News that a new drug regimen has helped him control the tics that are a result of the disease and allowed him to take on more acting roles.

The new Sony project was first reported by the entertainment website Vulture.
