Where Locals Hike in the Canadian Rockies: The Premier Trails in Kananaskis Country near Canmore and Calgary, by Kathy and Craig Copeland
“In the introduction to their new guide book, the Copelands admit they skipped over Kananaskis Country in their early years of hiking in favour of the more high-profile national parks in the region. Pretty quickly, however, they got over the idea that K-Country was a favourite for locals simply because it was close to Calgary.
In the fourth update to their book, the pair, known as the “opinionated hikers” behind such titles as Don’t Waste Your Time in the Canadian Rockies, get behind the idea of Kananaskis as an area full of outstanding hiking.
The Copelands live up to their philosophy of not just detailing trails — and there are plenty of them, 58 from the Highwood Junction to Canmore — but telling which ones are worth your time with the blunt assessments their fans have come to appreciate. While the book is as full and exhaustive as you would expect a trail guide to be, what makes it unique is the “opinion” section that kicks off each trail. With good humour and a critical eye, the book lays out the whys and hows of each trail. It’s a lively approach that works well with high production values of the publication, and clearly and simply offers great advise on where to tread. It’s like having your own hiking buddy in your back pocket.“
